Do Ductless AC Units Have Air Filters?

How to keep your ductless mini-splits running efficiently.

ductless ac Wareham, MA Spring is in the air in Wareham and across Southeastern Massachusetts. Tasha’s customers are powering down their furnaces and boilers. For households without central air or ductwork, it’s time to switch on the ductless ac mini-splits to keep the cool air flowing efficiently this summer.

As with any HVAC equipment, ductless air conditioning requires regular upkeep. You can do some of this maintenance yourself while a Tasha Fuels & Propane technician should do other work. One of the most important things you can do to maintain your ductless AC is to regularly check your air filters.

Checking and Cleaning Your Ductless AC Air Filters

Ductless mini-splits contain air filters like all forced-air HVAC equipment. You can typically find these air filters in each of the system’s indoor air handlers (the “heads” that are mounted inside your home).

We recommend you check your ductless AC air filters at least once a month during the peak cooling season (and during the heating season, too, if you have a ductless heat pump system). To check your filters, follow these steps:

  1. Ensure that your mini-split system is turned off.
  2. Gently open the front panel of each air handler. Your filter should be behind this panel.
  3. Remove the filter slowly so as not to shake dust and debris into the A/C unit.
  4. If the filter is dirty, vacuum or rinse it.
  5. Once the filter is clean and dry, re-insert it in the air handler and turn the system back on.

The Importance of Checking Your Air Filters

Air filters are your first line of defense against airborne pollutants that can negatively impact your indoor air quality (IAQ). Keeping them clean will lower allergy symptoms, dry skin, itchy eyes and respiratory illness in your home. Boosting your IAQ is also helpful in reducing dust accumulation and unpleasant household odors.

Staying on top of your air filters will keep the air flowing efficiently through your ductless AC system, so you use less electricity to keep your home cool this summer. Clean filters slow wear and tear on your equipment and expand its service life.

To further ensure your A/C system’s resilience, it’s also a good idea to regularly dust your indoor equipment and check your outdoor equipment to make sure weeds, grass, plants and debris don’t block it.
